Hickory Bark is the inner or cambium layer of the Hickory Tree. Hickory Bark is an excellent chair seating material and will give you many years of service.
Notes:
• Soak bark for 15 minutes and test for pliability. Soak 10 or 15 minutes more if needed.
• Examine the edges of each bark piece before weaving it into your chair. If you find any splinters along the edges trim them with scissors so the edges are smooth. If you find splinters, they usually run in the same direction. As you weave, start the bark so that the splinters do not “snag”.
• As you warp your chair seat (weaving back to front) use the thicker pieces of the bark as this part of the chair receives the most wear. Save the thinner pieces for weaving side to side.
• Hickory Bark will “cup” as it dries giving the bark a concave appearance. Sometimes the concave side is also the smooth side of the bark. For maximum seating comfort, the concave side of the bark should face the inside of the chair seat even if this means that the “rough” side is up.
